Overview

The Livingstone’s Eland is a striking subspecies of the common Eland, admired for its darker, bluish-grey coat and distinct vertical white stripes along the flanks. Slightly heavier and more robust than its southern cousin, the Livingstone’s offers a unique challenge for hunters who value both beauty and size in their trophies.

These animals are known for their alert nature and remarkable endurance. Despite their bulk, they move quietly through the bush, often disappearing into cover with surprising ease. Mature bulls develop thick, corkscrew-shaped horns and a heavy dewlap — both signs of age and dominance.

From a hunting perspective, Livingstone’s Eland demands patience, physical effort, and sound judgment. Tracking them often means long walks through mopane or miombo woodland, reading subtle signs like tracks and droppings. The reward comes when that massive, slate-colored bull finally appears, usually watching you long before you spot him. For many hunters, it’s one of Africa’s most satisfying plains game experiences — a combination of skill, stamina, and deep respect for the quarry.

Located in South Africa

In South Africa, the Livingstone’s Eland is most commonly found in the northern and eastern provinces, particularly Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal. These regions offer the dense woodland and mixed savanna habitat the subspecies prefers, with reliable water and thick cover for protection.

Limpopo’s vast bushveld and private game ranches are the prime areas for Livingstone’s Eland hunts, while parts of KwaZulu-Natal provide a more tropical environment with rolling hills and riverine forests. In Mpumalanga, herds are often seen near the lowveld, blending perfectly into the terrain.

Many private reserves manage pure Livingstone’s bloodlines through controlled breeding and habitat conservation. These sustainable programs ensure healthy populations while preserving the subspecies’ distinct appearance and behavior — offering hunters both ethical and high-quality experiences.

Best Months to Hunt

Livingstone’s Eland can be hunted year-round, but the dry season from May to September provides the best balance of comfort, visibility, and success. During these months, grass and leaf cover thin out, making herds easier to locate and stalk.

Cooler temperatures also mean longer, more productive hunting days. Eland are most active early in the morning and late in the afternoon, especially around waterholes or feeding areas. In the wetter summer months, thicker vegetation and heat can make hunts more physically demanding, though the experience remains rewarding for those seeking a challenge.
