Blesbuck are one of South Africa’s most recognisable plains game species, and they offer a surprisingly challenging and rewarding hunt, even for seasoned hunters. Blesbuck are strongly associated with the grassland plains of the Free State, where they originally roamed in vast numbers. Today, they are well established across much of South Africa, particularly in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and the North West, thanks to game farms and conservation-focused breeding programs. Their preferred habitat includes open grassveld, gently rolling plains, and lightly undulating farmland, areas where they can use their exceptional eyesight to detect threats from afar.

On many private reserves, blesbuck are managed in healthy herds, allowing hunters to select from a range of trophy-quality rams. Their movement patterns are shaped by grazing availability and herd hierarchy, and hunters often see dozens at a time spread across wide open fields.
