Overview

The Impala is one of South Africa’s most iconic and sought-after plains game species. Known for its grace, agility, and abundance, it’s often the first animal that visiting hunters pursue — yet it remains a challenge even for the experienced marksman. The Impala’s sharp senses, lightning-fast reflexes, and tendency to gather in large herds make it surprisingly difficult to approach undetected.

Hunters value the Impala not only for its elegant appearance and symmetrical lyre-shaped horns but also for the precision and stalking skills it demands. These antelope are constantly alert and will bolt at the slightest sound or movement. Hunting typically involves a slow, methodical stalk along bushveld edges or open plains, making use of natural cover and wind direction.

While some hunts are opportunistic, many hunters seek out Impala for the sheer experience — a classic, fair chase that tests one’s patience and awareness. Beyond its hunting value, the Impala provides excellent meat and a beautiful shoulder mount, making it a favorite trophy among both local and international hunters.

Located in South Africa

The Impala is one of the most widely distributed antelope species in South Africa, thriving in nearly every bushveld and savannah region. Its adaptability allows it to inhabit open woodlands, riverine thickets, and grassy plains, as long as there is access to water.

The Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces are especially renowned for producing large herds and impressive trophies, particularly in private reserves bordering the Kruger National Park. The North West, KwaZulu-Natal, and Eastern Cape also support healthy populations through extensive game management programs. Many hunting farms and conservancies across these provinces maintain Impala herds as part of their ecological balance, ensuring sustainable hunting opportunities.

Whether pursued in the dry thornveld of the Limpopo or the rolling grasslands of the Eastern Cape, the Impala remains a true symbol of African plains hunting — abundant, alert, and always graceful in flight.

Best Months to Hunt

Impala can be hunted year-round, but the prime hunting season runs from May to September when the bush is thinner and visibility is at its best. During these cooler, dry months, herds gather more frequently around water sources, offering greater chances for a clean, ethical shot.

The early morning and late afternoon hours are most productive, as Impala are more active during cooler parts of the day. In the rutting season — typically April through May — males are especially vocal and territorial, often challenging rivals in open areas. This provides exciting stalking opportunities and a memorable hunting experience.

With its mix of beauty, challenge, and abundance, the Impala remains a cornerstone of any South African plains game safari.
